that sums up my current working state pretty well.
20 parts poemas de amor, 2 parts cotton sweaters from the gap. pour over tiny asian girl and shake.

if my life were a postsecret no. 2
started packing tonight, even though i don't leave for a month. for some reason gaining things doesn't register as profoundly as discarding them. the former accrues gradually, while the latter tends to happen all at once. and then you realize how fucking ratty and unacceptable for resale all of your clothes are.

drawings made in the dark
stumbled into a church foyer at 9:00pm drunk last night, only to discover a few things during the inebriated piano playing that ensued:
1. my fingers are woefully out of practice
2. chopin etudes require absolute sobriety
3. the muscles in my hands are beginning to change from my current practice of stop-motion animating all day, every day. not sure how i feel about that. i think i would rather be able to play the piano.

anatomy of a playlist
emily has had this project for quite some time to make a list of ten favorite songs which encapsulate her being in a cd case. my list (in random order):
winnowing down the list was surprisingly easy. the nirvana/dave grohl covers speak to my complicated and obsessive relationship with nirvana, and through them an entire musical genealogy. wolf parade and blink 182 never fail to recall that rush of adolescence and bright lights. cat stevens, the jesus and mary chain, and hedwig comprise the scores of my favorite movies (harold and maude, lost in translation, and the eponymous hedwig and the angry inch respectively). the yeah yeah yeahs, while painfully obvious, sonically represent everything i want to aesthetically realize. at the very least, they are all songs about love.
- Tiny Dancer (Elton John cover), Dave Grohl
- Here She Comes Now (Velvet Underground cover), Nirvana
- Shine a Light, Wolf Parade
- All the Small Things, Blink 182
- If you want to sing out, sing out, Cat Stevens
- The Origin of Love, Hedwig and the Angry Inch Soundtrack
- Just Like Honey, The Jesus and Mary Chain
- Modern Romance, Yeah Yeah Yeahs
- Where Did You Sleep Last Night (Leadbelly cover), Nirvana
- Maps, Yeah Yeah Yeahs

self portrait of the artist on the eve of her 21st birthday
let's be honest. the negatives are shit because the vintage lightmeter i was using gave me a reading two stops too low. i printed them on a 3 filter, which strikes me as a cardinal sin in the church of ansel adams (side note: i thought about changing my facebook religious views to 'the zone system', but realized no one would find that funny). but it's not like these are photographs that i can reshoot, and they will still remain valuable to me because of their moment in time. just goes to show the beautiful images that i have produced in the past are not by accident, but by a deliberate and arduous process that typically goes shoot-catastrophe-reevaluate-reshoot. but what if we instilled an ethic of photographic process that can't be subject to this form of reiteration? that too has to answer to contingency? would roland barthes roll over in his grave?

d.f. in a nutshell
took this with my holga at the the insurgentes bus stop in d.f., whose recessed concrete plaza doubles as a skate park and marketplace. it contains a few of my favorite things: couples, blue skies, and the color orange
